Maintaining your vehicle at home is a satisfying way to keep your motoring costs down. With the right knowledge and products even someone who isn't very mechanically inclined can take care of many of the smaller issues in everyday driving. Sometimes, however, car issues can be too specialized or complex for the average motorist to take care of by themselves and it becomes time to take your car to the pros. Below you'll find three major warning signs that you need to get to a mechanic ASAP, as well as some of the potential causes behind them.
Engine and Drivetrain ProblemsLet's start at the beginning. If your car won't even turn over and start up, then the rest of the problems on this list won't come into play. The simplest cause of this issue is a dead battery, which you can remedy with jumper cables, and the instructions that come printed on their packaging. If jumping the car doesn't work, you may have a larger problem with your ignition system. It's advisable to take your car into the shop at this point because finding the root of the problem will likely involve removing a few parts from your engine. Whether it's dead spark plugs or electrical problems, it's better to have it dealt with by a professional. Likewise, engine surging where the revs rise and fall can mean a problem with your fuel injectors, which are fairly deep within your motor. It's unwise to drive around with a surging engine, as this burns more gas and can cause unintended acceleration. Drivetrain issues are another major issue requiring professional attention. Everybody fears the dreaded transmission repairs, so if certain gears won't engage or they shift at the wrong times you should definitely take your car to the qualified mechanics here at Powertrain Auto Service.
Vibration While DrivingThis issue can be caused by damaged drivetrain components, but can also stem from misaligned wheels or unbalanced or flat tires. If you feel any vibration or shuddering as you drive along, you should get to a mechanic as soon as you can. At its worst, this issue can lessen your control over the car, potentially causing accidents. This will also wear out your tires more quickly than if everything was straight and true. Unwanted vibrations put stress on important (and costly) components like suspension and brakes while decreasing gas mileage, so it's smart to take your car in as soon as these issues develop.
Poor Braking PerformanceYour brakes are vital to keeping you safe on the road and should definitely be cared for by a professional, unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing. Common signs of issues with your car's braking system include squeaking or squealing when the brakes are applied, or the brakes feeling spongy and failing to slow your vehicle properly. Squealing brakes are caused by the brake pads wearing through the pad surface to the metal underneath. At this point the metal behind your brake pad is coming into contact with the brake rotor. This can be disastrous and produce unwanted heat, reduced stopping power, and cause you to have to buy new rotors as well as the relatively cheap pads. Spongey and weak brakes can mean there's a problem with your master cylinder, which converts the mechanical pressure of you pressing the pedal into hydraulic pressure to apply the brakes. In either case, it's best to have your brakes seen to by the professional mechanics here at Powertrain Auto Service.
Our SUV malfunctioned while we were out of town. There were many auto shops that did not work on Mercedes Benz. Allen at Powertrain was able to fix the SUV in one day! The car rides great. I was able to travel back home to make it to work on time. We appreciate you and your staff. Thanks.
I got my transmission replaced here for half the price as Honda said they would do for. Honda wasn't offering any sort of warranty either, which is just insane. Powertrain offered me a 6 month warranty, and it has actually been 6 months now and I haven't had any transmission issues! Jennifer was also super comforting as she knew I was stressed out about this, and she knew her stuff, too! I would definitely go back here if I had to...but let's hope I don't! :)
We were heading home to NC after Hurricane Florence, and we got a flat. A good samaritan told us about them and we went to get it taken care of. The refered us to Goodyear "tire" and auto service repair literaly right next door and they wouldn't patch our "tire" makes no sense. Well we told the service representative, she was like she knows they do it and she told us that we will help. So, they patched us and it was cheap. These guys only had one tech and they were busy, but as promptly as possible got us plugged bless their hearts for such short notice and fast service. I would give more stars, but they only allow 5. Thank you guys.
My family and I are so grateful for Powertrain: Mr. Al, Mr. Lee and the amazing receptionist. We were headed to Baltimore to catch a flight for a family vacation to Mexico when we had major car trouble. Being that we lived over 3 hours away and it being after 5 pm, we were worried, tired, and on the verge of tears. We googled mechanics close by and Powertrain was our #1 option. We called them and was told to bring the vehicle in despite the fact that they closed in about 45 minutes. This company went above and beyond to help my family. My three children were greeted with hot chocolate, and we had the immediate feeling of relief. We were shown empathy and compassion. Repairs didn't cost us a fortune. Thank goodness. Two hours later we were on our way. Woohoo! Al could have easily turned us down, charged us a daily storage rate for our vehicle while we caught our flight, and charged us out the roof for repairs to take advantage of this situation. People are put in our lives for a reason, and Mr. Al and his team showed my family there is good in the world and taught my kids a valuable lesson to lookout for others, have faith, and not always think of ourselves. This company is ran with honesty and integrity, and it definitely showed that day. We really can't say enough about Powertrain...and we made our flight!!!! Thank you!
I encountered a really strange problem with my air conditioning in my 2010 Honda Civic. It wasn't cooling or would cool some and then stop after. The pipes would freeze too. I had only been going to Powertrain for just a couple of months and for small repairs so I was not really sure about using their services. Al, Jennifer and his team were so professional in delivering great customer service, very reasonable pricing, trustworthiness, and a commitment to getting the results needed at all costs. They also treat you like family and are very responsive to your needs. I highly recommend this stellar auto shop!
I went here for a replacement of radiator they are amazing. They're prompt with servicing your car. Knowledgeable about the work and reasonable with prices they are not money hungry jerks like a lot of mechanics can be. I wouldn't take my car anywhere else. If your in this area and in need of a mechanic, this is for sure the shop you should go to. Definitely the fastest I have ever gotten my car back from any mechanic that wasn't a major dealership and we all know how pricey a major dealership can be.
I have been using this company for over 10 yrs for many different problems. Recently they fix my 2005 mini van transmission. This car is running like brand new. Jennifer at front desk is friendly and owner Al is nice. Ask them any questions.
Outstanding honest auto service!!!
I have taken my car to Powertrain for various issues, I am always satisfied with the fair pricing and respectable service. Every problem I have had, is diagnosed and repaired in a timely manner. Every time someone has car trouble I always recommend Powertrain. 5 out of 5
Reliable and great services; reasonable price. I would recommend anyone who wants to get his/her car serviced.
I've been going to Powertrain for several years. The staff is very polite and professional. They service a wide variety of years, makes and models. They always tell me honestly what's wrong with my car and what needs to be done to fix it. Always give fair prices on all services. If anyone needs work done to their vehicle I would recommend Powertrain.
Jennifer's warm smile greets you upon entering. She is knowledgeable in her craft. The owner, Al, is friendly and approachable. If I have any questions regarding my car or how it works, he's the man I go to. The mechanics are fast. I went in for an oil change and was in and out in less than 20 minutes.
When looking for an auto repair shop, it is a bigger decision than most think. The auto mechanic that works on your car can pretty much tell you anything that they want. In my case I had something going on that I couldn't figure out on my own. I was expecting a huge bill for what ever was wrong. The problem with my car was minor and didn't cost that much. I give them a strong recommendation because they were honest when they didn't have to. Any of my friends that are looking for honest auto repair I am sending them here.
To the entire crew at Powertrain Auto, I want to say thank you for a job well done on my vehicle. I will heartily recommend Powertrain Auto to anyone who wants a great auto service. The staff altitude and customer service is outstanding. Please keep up the good work. Thank you all !
